African Baskets at the Arcade

Occasionally Golden Buckeye Fellowship highlights a business or manufacturing firm of interest to the public to tour as a group. On Friday, November 13 at 11 a.m. we will convene at Safari Treasures located in the newly completed Arcade off 3rd Street downtown Dayton. The exotic store is operated by Sandra Simi, an Adventist for many years in the area. She has resourced many countries of Africa and the world to provide a wide variety of beautiful bags, purses, and home decorating items with a colorful theme. Originally her store was located on Far Hills Avenue, but she has recently opened a new site at the Arcade. She will demonstrate her collection of wares and provide us with a video of how the baskets are made. Light refreshments will be provided.

To help her prepare for our visit, please register via our website, click HERE if you plan to attend. Time will be provided at the end of our visit for a walking tour of the restored Arcade itself.

The best place to park is the City of Dayton Municipal Parking Garage (123 W. Third St) with a fee of $2.00 for first hour and $1.00 each additional half hour. Other parking garages like the Reibold Garage (25 W. 5th St.) and the Arts Garage (107 N. Ludlow St.) are similarly priced.

We will end our activity by getting lunch at 2nd Street Market (600 E. 2nd Street) which is owned and operated by Five Rivers MetroParks. If it’s been a while since you visited the market, there’s a lot of new vendors and restaurants to chose from. It a go-to-place for Daytonians on weekends. A typical lunch will cost $10-15 per person. There is free parking on both sides of the building.

Historically, when the facility was a functioning 1911 Baltimore and Ohio Railroad freight hub, it actually consisted of two twin depot buildings side-by-side: the inbound freight depot (which is the current 2nd Street Market) and the outbound depot next door, which was historically referred to as the Webster Street Market building.

Should be a fun midday event!
